Bengt Beier - travels and photography

Torren is a small settlement which nowadays forms part of Golling, south of Salzburg. It’s name derives from the same root as the English word torrent – quite fitting as it is indeed bordered by two torrents: one coming from the Golling waterfalls, one from the beautiful Bluntautal valley.

The placenames show that people of different languages mingled in this area: While the place name “Torrén” was coined by speakers of a romance language similar to Rhaetian, the town of Golling right next to it got its name from old Slovenian “Golica”, meaning bare hill.
